Details in Brief:
Customer: Rolls Royce
System: Emergency Cooling System LOCA Valves
Product Type: Top-entry Ball Valves
Design Standard: ASME III Class 1
Project Description:
The valves were required for the D154 Project to refuel Vanguard-class nuclear-powered submarines in Devonport Royal Dockyard. Vanguard submarines, which carry Trident nuclear missiles, are the principal element of the UK's nuclear deterrent. Truflo designed and supplied manual & remote automatic LOCA isolation valves. LOCA valves are included in the system to prevent the escape of radioactive media during a Loss Of Cooling Accident. The valves must be guaranteed to function without failure under extreme pressure and temperature conditions. However this criticality is compounded by the difficulty that once installed, they cannot be tested under extreme conditions, so reliability must be assured by design. Cleanliness was also of vital importance, so a strict material control regime was put in place, and the valves were manufactured in a dedicated stainless steel machine facility to eliminate any risk of cross-contamination.
Valve Characteristics:
Size: 2"
Special Features: Forged bodies to ensure the highest possible levels of integrity
Material: 316 L Stainless Steel
Testing:
Hydraulic and functional tests in accordance with DGS PS 5104 SECTION 2.2
Ultrasonic tests to ensure that there were no discontinuities below the material surface
Liquid Penetrant Inspection to check for faults in the material surface
Details in Brief:
Customer: EDF Heysham 2 & Torness Nuclear Power Plants
System: Primary Cooling Circuit (CO2 System)
Product Type: Top-entry Cryogenic Ball Valves
Design Standards: ANSI, ASTM
Project Description:
The requirement was for over 200 isolation valves at each site for service on the primary cooling circuit. The CO2 coolant must be handled in liquid and gas phases so a wide range of operating temperatures was specified. Truflo supplied valves which are still in service with minimal maintenance after more than 30 years of reliable operation.
Valve Characteristics:
Sizes: DN15 TO DN150
Special features: Extended bonnets to enable lagging of pipeline and keep the top of the valve as warm as possible to prevent low-temperature seizure
Material: Low temperature carbon/stainless steel
Testing:
Hydraulic pressure test body cavity to 150 bars
Pressure test 6.9 bar
Details in Brief:
Customer: Russian State Company
System: Replacement valves for existing fuel enrichment plant
Product Type: Bellows-sealed Plug Valve
Project Description:
The customer had experienced difficulties for many years in sourcing valves suited for service on Uranium hexafluoride (UF6) as a part of the nuclear fuel enrichment process. Due to the radioactivity of the medium, the requirement was for very low maintenance in service, zero leakage and a design which minimised voids where material could collect.
Our team of design engineers developed a bespoke plug valve design which would prevent formation of crystalline deposits and provide bellows sealing for maximum leakage control. The streamlined design included rounded edges on the valve exterior, minimising weight and size whilst making it easier to install.
Valve Characteristics:
Size: 65mm
Special Features: Top Entry for quick and easy in-line maintenance
Bellow sealed for maximum level of leakage control
Taper Sealed no cavity for flow of high purity gas and prevention of crystalline deposits
Material Stainless steel and carbon steel versions
Testing:
Leak tests with Helium 6.7 e-7 m3pa/sec
Cycle test with Nitrogen as a medium
Vacuum test
