29/11/2011 | Truflo supports brave BAE Trekkers

Truflo Marine is pleased to support two employees of BAE Systems who are undertaking a challenge of a lifetime to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

John Hingley is the Programme Manager for the fourth submarine ‘Audacious.’ John, together with his son Phillip, who also works for BAE on the Successor Program, will attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.

The ascent will begin on Saturday 21st January.

John has offered an insight into the path that the journey will take; the impact of altitude sickness is the main concern; this is one of the main reasons climbers do not make it to the summit. The trek will begin in a 30 degrees Celsius heat, the temperature will gradually drop to approximately – 20 degrees Celsius towards the summit; layering clothes will be key to keeping warm.

‘We will drive to our starting point at Machame Gate where we will complete park formalities and start our trek. The path winds its way through magnificent forest where the air is noticeably humid; we will reach our first camp at 3,100 metres after an approximate five hour walk.

On the second day we will walk for approximately six hours out of the jungle forest and into open moorland.

The third day will see us climbing on high moorland, at heights of 4,600 metres.

The fourth day is a shorter day but involves steep ascent; the climb isn’t technical but can be long and tiring. We will pass under magnificent glaciers towards our camp at 3,963 metres. Our total walking time will be approximately five hours.

The climb on day four will take us across desolate scree towards camp at 4,600 metres.  The walk will be tough and steep but we will arrive at camp early to spend the afternoon resting ahead of the long night and day ahead. At 11.00pm we will set off for the final climb to the summit.

The night time trek enables us to avoid walking for too long in the heat of the sun but the temperatures will be below freezing; we will gain height rapidly over a short distance. As day breaks, the views of the ice cliffs within the crater rand the African plains in the distance will be breathtaking. Another hour and we will arrive at the summit at 5,896 metres; the highest point in Africa. The freezing crater rim will be left behind; a descent on scree will take us to camp at 3,900 metres.

The next day, a gentle five hour trek will take us through the rainforest to Mweke Gate where we will complete park formalities and say goodbye to the mountain. Awaiting vehicles will take us back to our hotel where a welcome shower and celebration meal will await.’

‘Macmillan Cancer Support’ work to improve the lives of people affected by cancer; providing extensive practical, emotional and financial support.

Mount Kilimanjaro Facts:

(Wikipedia)

 *  A dormant, giant stratovolcano situated in Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania

which began forming I million years ago; there are three volcanic cones.

*  The highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 metres above sea level and the fourth

    highest mountain in the world.

*  There are six official trekking routes up the mountain. John & his team are taking

Machame which is by far the most scenic but steepest route.

*  Due to the altitude, all trekkers will suffer considerable discomfort, typically

shortage of breath, hypothermia and headaches.

*  Some estimate that more people have died to date trekking up Kilimanjaro than

Mount Everest but Everest is attempted by fewer climbers. In August 2007, four

trekkers died within a week underscoring the point that trekking to the summit

    should not be undertaken lightly.
